FCB | Posted in General Discussion on May 20, 2007 05:41am

Does anyone have any experience with A I A Industries skylights? They are being recommended for skylight replacement.

thanks

Don't know anything about AIA. Velux is a good brand. By the way I have two that are new that I need to get rid of. They have the flashing kits. Will fit rough opening 32"X47". Not sure where you are located. (No information in profile)

Who is doing the recommending? The salesman?

I have never heard of them before, which doesn't say too much, but I have handle a few thousand skylight installs and I don't think you can do any better than the Velux pachage.

recommendation is by the contractor/installer. I have had good luck with Velux in past but contractor feels the A I A product is superior.

He is the one who has to warrantee it. How much do you trust him vs how much do you trust Velux?I tried to find it in the Ebuilddatabase so I could see their specs and CAD drawings to see hopw it is designed and put togehter. Could find nothing by that name. Can you supply a website or are you sure the manufacturer is right? If they are too hard to find a public presence now, how will you ever find them when it comes time to deal with warrantee issues is what comes to my mind.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.

Thanks Bill, I should have tried Google instead of my old standby for construction documentation. FCB, I don't see much there to impress me except they do have quite a variety of shapes available. But most of their products, if not all ( downloading here is slow) do not have flashing and curb. That can be good or bad, depending on how good the contractor is at doing that stuff. DEFINITELY Stay away from the domed acrylic stuff. That is a gauranteed leak. For a nice home, I wouldn't want anything but glass. But for a sunroom or greenhouse, the polycarbonate is OK - surely better than the old vynil they made some of these out of.

OK, I have had more time to see their site. There are large differences in these and the Velux style. Some may be gtood for certain applications like BUR roofing, but overall, I would be hard pressed to call these better than the Velux line and there aere some roofs I would absolutely refuse to use them on.

It looks like their product is a quality one but the style and methodology itself is what I question. It has more in common with the cheaper skylights that I see leak more often, tho that can also vary with the installers skillset, aptitude, and attitude.

These would not be my first choice for most locations, but it is possiuble for a skilled tradesman to install one most places in an acceptable manner.

So the answer comes back to you in the form - do you want an acrylic look or glass and how much do you trust his skills.

For myselfd, when he says these are better than Velux, I think he may mean easier.
