Hi Folks:
Saw some “mottled purple” slate counter tops today that were gorgeous. What is the take out there regarding durability, ease or difficulty of installation, staining, cracking, scratching, sealing…all the practical questions to ask. We are sold on the look, but do want those who have the experience to guide us. Thanks much.

*John-All of the above. Seriously, slate is one of the worst materials to use for a counter. It needs to be sealed twice a year. It scratches, stains, you name it-it does it.If you like the look of slate, why not choose a granite that resembles what you like about slate and have them hone it? The durability of granite is fantastic and it's less prone to scratch.
*john, slate is one of those things that look best in someone elses home. If you plan on using your kiten at all then slate is not the thing. As stated above sealing 2 to 3 times a year and the softest of the material to use.
