Sliding compound miter saws

| Posted in General Discussion on September 16, 2000 03:42am

I’ve had a Hitachi C8FB for about 9 years and love the saw. But now I’m looking to replace it with either a Hitachi 10″ slider or a Makita LS1013. The Makita has more bells on it, but the location of the scale bugs me. It would always be covered up by what you’re gonna cut! I’m biased to the Hitachi mostly because of familiarity and cause I wouldn’t have to change my chopsaw workstations to accomodate the change in base height. The low fence on the hitachi bothers me too. Anybody got some opinions out there?

I totally agree with you about the mitre scale on the Makita; however , since I've had mine awhile, I've gotten really used to it. I usually set the mitre before I place a board over it and I guess I've just gotten used to the scale being on the side.

I did have to fine tune my 1013 a little and ever since it has stayed dead on accurate. I really like the soft start feature and the slower RPM as compared to other brand saws.

When I purchased my saw I didn't think that I would use the double bevel feature much; however , I use it alot and find it really beneficial when cutting long lengths of crown moulding.

One thing about the Makita LS1013 is that it comes with a excellant factory 60 tooth blade that makes some of the smoothest cuts I've ever seen. I also appreciate the fact that I don't have to stock another blade size.

I've heard alot of good comments on the Hitachi saws also. It's just a tough call to make.

*Eric, Another good thing about the Makita is the little device that allows you to switch from a dado cut back to a full cut without adjusting the stop, like you do now with your old Hitachi. I have the old Hitachi, but use my friends Makita everyday and I can truly say the Makita is better.

*I think the Makita LS1030 is my favorite tool, also agree that the stock blade is great.I don't think I would care for the fence on the Hitachi, and you might look at the maximum cut angles, I believe I get >52 degrees on one side.Couple of probs I have had>>> the safety lock on the trigger fell out, "fixed it" with a wall anchor and duct tape. Part of the pin that holds the sawhead down fell off, I hold it in place while working with duct tape. Finally, the cord is crap and is cracking and such, I wonder how I could "fix" that.Actually, now that I think about it I think my favorite tool is duct tape. Maybe I am related to Red Green.
