Small holes in drywall-fuzz around edges

I want to spackle a bunch of small drill holes in my drywall in the garage. Normally I would just buy some compound and get to work, but I was wondering if anyone has a technique to prep the holes so that the fuzzy bits of paper that stick out from the edges of the holes don’t get in the way. If they were smooth around the edges it would be much easier to fix them, because I wouldn’t have to put an extra coat of compund over the whole area and then sand it down. I tried the obvious, using sandpaper, but that just makes the problem worse…
Any ideas?

If they are in fact just small nail or drill size holes take your 4" spackle knife (or smaller) and dent the hole in with the end of the handle or use a hammer.
Just make a dent....dont put another hole in the wall...lol. In other words don't rip the paper on the rock.
Spackle three coats or use the lightweight quick drying spackle and use one or two coats.
Be quick : )~ (nah ; )~ )

In his first interview since the stroke, Ram Dass, 66, spoke with great difficulty about how his brush with death has changed his ideas about aging, and how the recent loss of two old friends, Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg, has convinced him that now, more than ever, is the time to ``Be Here Now.''

I like the light weight idea. The end of your goldbatt blade has a point on it . If you turn it around you can stick it in the hole and dent it.
For bigger holes like the size of a silver dollar or more , with the paper torn and starting to lift around the edges. What I usuall do is cut the paper back till you reach a point where it is still bonded to the Gypsum. That will keep it from springing back up, everytime you go over it, with your blade. I usually do it before the first coat.
If the hole is bigger, So big that the spackle will sink into the hole. You can take a 6" strip of 1x @ a width slightly less than the hole. Put a wire tie around the middle of the strip. And feed it through the hole. Hang on to the wire tie and pull it tight against the inside of the sheetrock. Take your screw gun and put 2 or 4 screws into the strip, creating a backer. Cut your wire tie, use a pair of diagonal pliers if you must. then push it back thru. That way you won't push all the compound thru.
Of course if it is even bigger still you can screw a patch of sheet rock to the board inside the hole, and tape it. It will dry better and faster. Even better. On bigger problems I like to use the time set gypsum that you mix up your self. It dries harder, But it dries quicker to and its harder to sand. Its great around ceiling cans. you can mix it up thick so it stays where you put it.

Do it Andy's way if they are small lile about a 3/8" in diamter. You can also use drywall tape, dent it first, put the mud on and then tape over it. For larger holes up to 6" x 6" use a blowout patch. Cut a square around the hole, then cut the sheetrock so that the 4 sides of the same size sheetrock have the facepaper of the sheetrock still on it, apply mud all around the blowout patch and on the inside of the patch and apply the sheetrock and wipe it clean. Let it dry and apply a bigger coat with a 8 or 10" knife and then sand.
I think Andy's idea is great, and I'll use it. However, the sheer number of holes is daunting! Many years of garage wall abuse! Most of the holes are nail size, so I think the dent method will work best. Thank's to everyone for your help.

How about just putting another layer of drywall up? If you have so many holes it might be easier.
The walls are covered with shelves, cabinets, and tool hanging brackets, in addition to holes, so it would be impractical to replace the drywall. I probably overstated the problem, there are a lot of holes but I think that making a dent at each hole will be the hot ticket.

Well, I wouldn't even want to try putting new drywall in my garage! Can't hardly even walk in it now. TOO MUCH JUNK!
