Any ideas on using smooth river stones, about 1-2″ for a shower base instead of ceramic tile. Plan to install it over a mortar bed. Any pitfalls with this material used in this manner? Thanks.

I can't offer advice but i love the idea-- it is one which i've had in the past also.
Hence, i would love to see a picture of it if and when you finish.

*Hey Marc, did you go to SUNY?
*I've seen similar applications. Just be wary of maintaining the pitch for drain, or you'll get puddling. A little puddling may not sound bad, but when the water evaporates and leaves behind soap/shampoo/dead skin cell residue...One person that has a shower like this mentioned she keeps a mop near the shower and gives the floor a quick swabbing a few minutes after getting out of the shower. Sounds like work, but once part of the routine it only takes a few seconds. If you do it, please do follow up with more info.
*Marc, the installation method you plan on using is to set the stones in thinset over a cured mortar bed. Is this correct? Why not set the stones directly into the fresh mud of the mortar bed?
