Hi:
My client wants to put a 5′ soaking tub in a 5′ wide bath with a plaform and kneewall so that the tub height finishes at 30″. This means that the tile on the back and two sides would come down on top of the tub, while on the front long face, the self-rimming tub would set on top of the tile. Is this a bad idea? I won’t get the advantage of the flange found on alcove tubs, but I can still use hardibacker/caulk/ and grace vycor to protect the tile to tub joint.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Check the manufacturer.
Many manufacturers have a tile flange as an accessory you add on. While not the one pc molded in flange they do provide a seal if installed according to directions (and a little ingenuity).
