Solatube in slate

theslateman | Posted in Photo Gallery on September 20, 2009 09:16am

On the house with the ” canvas to copper ” roof ,I was asked to install this item on Saturday to let light into a back bedroom .

I’ve put in lots of Velux , but never had the ” pleasure ” of putting one of these in . Don’t think I’ll be making it a habit !!

Nice work, but I don't like those things, either.

      Grant,

The HO bought it online and asked me to put it in the roof this trip over .

I can't believe someone would put that terrible looking item on a classy slate roof from the 1860's !!

Lets be treated to lots more copper shots this week please !!

I have to install a couple of those in a shake roof in a few weeks. The owner asked me to fabricate some sort of copper trim ring so that the plastic is not visible.

          David ,

It's not plastic , but painted metal , if you're talking about the roof curb .

It's likely the worst item I've ever dealt with on slate .

Looks like a wart on a bulls a** from the ground !

Oh.... looked like PVC to something similar. Metal or not, it's going to clash with all the copper trim on his roof so he wants something done about it.

Install a copper flashed Velux instead . These things are not well made .

See how ugly that thing is once it's installed ???

What little research I did showed mostly satisfied Solatube owners/installers, much less out there re the Velux. Owner decided Solatube was the one he wanted and chose the diffuser and other parts he wants. It is not in a conspicuous location on his house unless you are a bird or a chimney sweep.

            David ,

The owner here already had the unit he had bought , so I was simply the installer into the roof .

I guess if thats whats wanted thats what they're gonna receive , in both our cases .

Just seemed flimsy to me , but I can't see it from my house .

Am I not seeing any underlay or paper on that sheathing?

      Duane ,

I papered in the right side and slated it , then went over and did the left side .

Think I'm a corner cutter do ya !!

Naw, not corner cutter, I was just taken aback by the bare wood there.

I had a slate roof on my 1709 Pa. farmhouse, you could see daylight from the attic side, but never a leak. Funny how water surface tension makes it drain off before it can drip in.

BTW, I installed 3 of them tubes on a house in NC, hated it.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Couldn't you have done it with plastic slate?
