I'm looking for information on making sprung crown mouldings. The application is for the frieze detail on a barrel vault dormer, where the crown is applied over a curved frieze board on the front exterior of the dormer. We have the moulder to create the crown but don't have the math and technique to calculate shape of the crown on the flat so that when installed it will take on the radius of the roof.

Ed, I believe your crown, when laid flat, needs to be in an arc. The top of the arc will match the radius of the vault, and the lower radius of the arc will match the radius scribed by the bottom edge of the crown when installed.
Hopefully someone here can assist with some clues as to how to achieve this.
The apperance you're seeking sounds great.
Good luck, Steve T.
*Ed, I think I over-simplified this ... IF you laid out the crown as I described, THEN it would have to be shaped of thick stock, with the cutter head at the 52-degree angle, presuming you want to match the other crown on your project. If you laid the material flat as I described, I'm afraid the size/shape of the crown would have to be adjusted to match the difference in the two radii.Let's hope someone verifies or corrects my thinking here.Steve T.
*How many here think the framers should block for this type of crown?Blue
*Ta hell with blocking it. . . I'd like to see you install it. . . 6# sledge and senco framer!!! ;>}
