Sondra, I would try two trim head dry wall screws down through each tread into each stringer. But you got to get it in the stringer. I know that this is not the most asthetic approach,
but it works. Otherwise, you'll have to expose the underside of the stringers to shim and glue the threads to the stringer.
Sometimes the squeek comes from the tread rubbing against the riser. A bead of construction adhesive behind the scotia mould can sometimes fix this. Sometimes. But you have to let it cure for at least 24hrs. That's all I got right now, anybody else?
*Nope thats pretty much what I was thinking but I type to slow . Chuck
*The only thing I would add, is if you are going to the trouble to use plugs over the screws, to use regular wood screws instead of drywall screws, which are "forged" and snap pretty easily. Wood screws are tapered and are much stronger, A shame to do all that work only to have the screw snap a year from now. - yb
*Depending on where the squeak is coming from you might try talcom powder where the tread and riser meet. I know it works on my hardwood floors. I like some squeak, it adds character. Glenn
*I think a little squeek adds character too. In new construction, would construction adhesive (and screws)be a good idea to attach the treads and risers to the stringers? I usually make my stringers from microlam.
*Ron, I always add a good thick bead of construction adhesive to the tops of the stringer before I screw down the tread. It has never failed me when it comes to "no squeaks". I haven't been glueing the riser though. But I think I'll start now. My friend and I like the idea of using microlams for the stringers. Good idea. Thanks, Ed.
*My uncle has squeaky stairs, I offered to fix them for him a while back. "Absolutely NOT" was his answer. The squeaks were his little alarm that warned him when his teenagers were trying to sneak in or out of the house.Music to his ears.
