Currently I have a 2nd floor deck and of course doors from the 2nd floor to acess it. The deck needs to be replaced, I have had continous problems with water getting in under the doors, and I found that I really don’t need a 2nd story deck. That all of the outdoors activity is off the first floor patio.
So I have been looked at replacing the 2nd story deck with a porch roof for the first floor patio and replacing the doors with windows.
But the deck is very handy to use to clean the gutters. Just set up my step ladder.
Also as part of this project I want to cover the T-111 siding with cedar drop siding and a “natural finish”. That means that it will need recoating every couple of years.
So I am looking at how I can access the wall area above the porch with getting an articulated manlift or other extensive staging.
The roof with be 3:12 or 4:12 and probably a snap lock metal with hidden fasteners.
What I thought about doing would be to make a “platform” that is similar to some that I have seen in the “handy hints” section to hold tools and supplies. Useing some 2 by material make a triangle wedge so that the top is level. And pad the bottom to protect the metal roofing.
Make 2 or 3 of those and then I can run some planks horizontally as a platform to stand on or to set a ladder on.
And to keep it from sliding down the roof I would install some eyes on the wall and hooks on the wedge or use something similar.
Is this a reasonable solution? Any better ideas?

You didnt say how long the porch is but seems to me if youre doing this every two years why not rent an aluminum plank and ladder brackets instead of all the hassle your talking about.
You certainly can reach down from a plank as well as above you.
Also, why would you have to recoat every "two" years?
I'd look into a way better stain.

In his first interview since the stroke, Ram Dass, 66, spoke with great difficulty about how his brush with death has changed his ideas about aging, and how the recent loss of two old friends, Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg, has convinced him that now, more than ever, is the time to ``Be Here Now.''

The porch roof with be 30 ft long and project 10-14 ft and 3/12 or 4/12 pitch. That would require the ladder to be at less than 45 degrees.
You are probably right about the every 2 years. But I "think" that I want to use a clear or lightly toned product instead of a semitransparent. And I know that they don't last near as long as those with more pigment.
And I have had to clean out the gutters twice this spring. I plan on putting on some screens, but now I have not had tot really be concerned a about any of this as I can very easily access it.
Sounds good. I would fasten some rubber to the bottom of the wedges and dispense with the hook and eyes.
I would be afraid of them sliding down the roof, specially if I end up with the metal roofing.
If I end up with composition then that might work.
