A customer wants to replace existing red wood lap siding which is showing age with something else. He suggested cedar, which I am not opposed to, but I suggested stained plank, if it can be stained to match the stained redwood that he has now. He showed some interest in the product.
My question is, has anyone had experience staining stained plank siding with an exterior stain, and how well did it work. I put some regular interior trim stain on a piece, and it looked quite good when it dried. One concern would be protection of the cement product by the stain, and weathering.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Fred

IIRC, Cuprinol can be used, but don't hold me to that.
Olympic, IMO is junk.
Hardie is a different animal, and not enuf track record to prove anything so far..I can easily disagrree with most of thier BS and or reccomendations, as to finishing it off.
In your case, i'd try a sample of Cuprinol, and do a real life test..spray the sumbitc witha hose under full sun, hit it with a torch, pee on it..what ever.

There was another thread about that recently. I don't remember if it was here or in House Chat.
Mason's Select has a good fiber cement stain. There have been several posts on it so you might search the archives. Here's one where I posted some pictures:

I think Jim Blodget had a thread or response about this very thing
do not think he was trying to match another stain as much as he purchased pre-stained material
he was very pleased and had some good pictures!
See if your local supplier of hardi has that in the stain features, in some parts of the country they do and it looks realy nice. just a note on their prepainted stuff . it is incredably durable and looks alot better than painting it after. <!----><!---->
