I am about to stain and/or paint my newly built and installed staircase. The treads and handrail will be stained and the risers and balusters will be painted.
My question is what do I do first? Should I stain first and then paint or vice versa? I presume I should stain first, but I’d like a painters opinion.

You're right, stain and clearcoat slopped on to areas that get painted is no problem. Paint dripping onto raw wood is like staining it, except probably not the color you'd want to stain it. After the natural wood is sealed with its clearcoats, any paint drips can easily be wiped off.
