My latest project-new house- has an interior decorator helping my client with all her choices of color, cabinets, flooring ,etc. One of the issues that is going back and forth is the fact that they want to see maple hardwood flooring installed everywhere in the house and that it is to be stained before the final finish is applied.(light grey) Now i have called upon 2 of my favorite floor finishers, and both have told me not to do that because maple is very difficult to stain without getting blotchy areas in it. They have told me this is because the sandpaper will hit a particularly hard spot and quickly dull the sandpaper without you knowing it,therefore, making it less aggresive,and changing it’s performance. This is wher the blothes show. Does anyone know of a sure-fire,fool-proof way to get results for staining maple? The decorator tells me they do it all the time and it looks great every time.

the floor finishers are right, the decorator is blind--the only fool-proof way to get blotch-free color on maple is to paint it.

Why try some mock ups to convince the decorator?

I agree with all comments...Maple is a toughie to stain. Decorators..LOL..Yea they do it all the time! Heard that many, many times. A natural maple finish looks awesome..why ruin it.
