Hi all,
Once again I’m back hoping to solve a problem which is probably simple but has me pulling out my hair! I am in the process of covering an interior concrete stair (going to a finished daylight basement) with oak treads and risers, and, adding skirts to the sides. The sheetrock runs all the way to the concrete (which I don’t think is a big problem). Normally I have alwasy just set the skirts on top of the treads and then transfered rise and run with a straight edge. The problem I am having is that each step is different, not plumb or level or square. Does anyone use any type of material to do a mockup when doing something like this and if so, what would you use? The skirts don’t have to be perfect except at the top and bottom because the treads and risers will cover any small gaps but, I would like my work to not look like a chainsaw scupture if I can avoid it. Thanks for any tips you guys may have!

I suppose you could template it with strips of 1/8" plywood and a hot glue gun.
Karl,
Perhaps this will help you ... http://forums.taunton.com/tp-breaktime/messages?msg=88680.1

That looks great! I am planning on placing the skirts on the concrete stairs before applying the treads and risers although this way looks like it might be cleaner since it fits the actual bullnose of the tread. I normally just scribe the ends of the treadsa nd cut and sand to fit. Any pros or cons to this compared to putting the treads on first?
Thanks
Karl
Don't know about the pros/cons. You might send a note to McDesign and query him on that. Seemed like most guys were notching the treads to fit the skirt rather than the other way around.
Check out a thread called stair hackin'. If you can tack an uncut skirt above the treads, it might work out for you.

Come on, sit by the logs in the fire.
The moonlight reflects from the window
Where the snowflakes, they cover the sand.
Come out tonight, ev'rything will be tight,
