I am going to build a U-staircase with Oak treads and painted trim. I would like to place the wall side of the treads in a housed stringer. For stained wood I have seen housed stringers made of the same species as the tread. What is the recommended wood for a paint grade housed stair stringer?

I've built quite a few housed stringers out of #2 5/4 x 10 pine. I left 3/4-in. of wood when mortising, and nailed the hidden part of the stringer to the studs with 16d sinkers.

*Poplar is another popular wood for paint-grade work. It machines well and is usually nearly knot-free.Mike
