I am considering re-roofing with stone coated stamped steal made by GERARD:
http://www.gerardusa.com/tile-roofing.htm
Your comments on two items would be appreciated:
- What do you think of the product/company/etc?
- The installer says it is designed to go OVER my existing cedar shakes. I’d feel better ripping them off and re-decking, but for an addition $4K, I just don’t know.
I am attracted to the product because I do not want cedar again, composite is an option, but I think this stuff looks a lot better and will supposedly last a lot longer. I have a tutor style home in KC and I don’t think composite will do it justice. Slate would be appropriate, but that’s not happening!
THANKS

Never heard of them, but then they've never heard of me either. Check the track record/history of the company. There's been a lot of steel roofing companies come and go in the last 10 years. A warranty is worthless if there's no one around to honor it. See my thread "a copper roof in progress" in the photo gallery. I've seen a lot of finish failure on this type stuff.

If your shakes are installed correctly, they're on split sheathing (spaces between the boards). You don't know if you're hitting sheathing or just old rotten shake with the fastners. Also, all the flashings need to be redone with the new roof. Tough to do with the old ones still in place. I say get it torn off. Saving that $4k now might cost you $10k down the road.
Good luck
