When you install a standard enamelled steel tub with the 1″ lip sticking up around the edge, and you will be installing ceramic tile over 1/2″ cement board, how do you install the cement board? Do you let it bump the top flange and leave a gap underneath, or shim the board out 1/4″ with lath or something similar, or just let it “bend” over the flange? (my least favorite option).

shim.

I shim the entire surround with strips of lath. I then cover framing with 15# roofing felt prior to installation of cement tile backer. Hold tile backer off tub 1/8" so that any possible movement of tub will not affect wall finish. caulk gap with silicone prior to tile installation.

Yeah, I kinda figured that would be the best way. Gotta go get me a bundle of lath now.... thanks!
