Standing Seam Metal Roof Underlay Questions

OK … Spring finally in VT (well we did have a light snow last weekend) … time to finish the roof on the shop.
Got the last piece of cap on the main roof Christmas Eve (not bad for a one man crew) … now time for the small roof.
I used a drip edge detail all around (sides and gable ends).
Questions … first, where does the underlay go? Does it go on the roof sheathing (obviously), under the drip edge and right down the wood fascia?
Or does it go on the roof sheathing and on top of the drip edge …
Or sheathing and under on the bottom edge and under the side edges …
Or ….
The main roof was over purlins so I didn’t worry about underlay.
Also … what do you guys use for underlay? I was thinking Grace ice and water HT … but there are dozens of others out there .. some a lot cheaper.
Thanks!

Using a high-temp synthetic underlayment is generally the most suitable choice under a standing seam metal roof, especially in hot climates or over solid decking. It resists heat, doesn’t degrade like felt, and provides better moisture protection long-term. Make sure it’s compatible with your roof system for warranty purposes.
