Whaddya like for starter courses when doing architectural shingles?
I can get some low-end 3-tabs that work out to 24 cents per lf of edge, or this roll shingle starter stuff that is 34 cents.
For what we’ll do, there is about a $50 material savings if we use the 3-tabs.

Depends on where the glue is on the Architectural shingles. If its on the bottom of the archy, then it doesn't matter. If it's on the top of the archy, I'd prefer the starter strips.

I always have leftover shingles to use for starteers.
And the only time the roll starter works halfway decent is when it is good and hot, otherwise it will not lay down smooth. The wwrinkles will leave you with unsightly buckles in the roof edge. Even in hotter climates, the edge is the first thing, so you are puttiong starter on early AM before it warms up.

I like starter strips. Fast, easy. But cheap 3 tabs do the job too.x2 on the "nix the starter roll"
I always use 3 tabs. If you go to your supplier, you can talk them into cleaning out thier yard of junk bundles for almost nothing. I know time is money but $50 a job is $50 a job. I use leftover architecturals to go up the rakes, it leavs a cleaner overhang and is easy to cut back your shingles to.

3-tabs.
Use pitch if there are edge glue-down issues.
