My wife has this wonderful natural talent to look at a room and come up with color schemes and decorating ideas. In light of this fact she is pursuing her dream of starting a painting/decorating business. I am finding that the the most difficult part of this setting this business up is deciding on how much to charge the client. We live in a small NW Wisconsin town, where affluence is not wide spread.
I was curious if anyone has any ideas on billing the customer. I was thinking about:
1.) Billing by the hour (we have been charging $20/hour)
2.) billing by the room size based on square footage with surcharges added for special techniques and difficult locations (ie. two story entry-ways).
Without any advertising other than word of mouth, her business is already starting to grow. We are very excited about the possibilities.
I have been been building custom furniture for years as a hobby and we have a garage full of first class woodworking equipment (Delta, Porter Cable, Dewalt, etc.). I would eventually like to follow her into this business and develop my woodworking business to complement hers. Even though I am only 35, I have been a professional pilot for the last 14 years and I am fed up with the rat race and constantly being gone. Time to stay home and be with our kids.
Thanks for any help!!
