As a favor to a client whom I’ve done alot of work for, I repiped a steam radiator to move it a few inches. This is a one pipe steam system. He seems to know the system quite well and said naught when I showed up with galvanized fittings and nipples.
I’m being told that galvanized iron pipe is not suitable for steam heat; that it will rust out in a year. My plumber, who is now doing other work in the house has stated this.
I’m not so sure that I’m buying this.
What is suitable, and what is the difference between the different types of iron pipe available?
Thanks,
Eric

Black pipe is what you want to use. Go to http://www.heatinghelp.com and post at the forum there, where some steam experts hang out.

Dan Houlihan in one of his books tells an anecdote of a lady going with a cheapo plumber who piped her steam boiler with....PVC!
I recall "linguini" being used to describe the result.
Anyone that owns a steam system must read We've Got Steam Heat! and the Steam Heat FAQ books by Dan Houlahan....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
