I need some input on the pros and cons of using steel siding versus brick for our new house. My wife wants a real “country” look here in the dry Texas Panhandle. I just want it to last without too much upkeep. I also want to use the most economical exterior for this area so long as it will last in our somewhar arid climate with often very cold winters. Any ideas?

Brick is high end. Very durable in all climate conditions but labor intensive to install. To my mind both metal and vinyl siding, even the best prodeucts, do not detail like the wood they replicate. Window and door trim, eaves, soffits, and fascia look fake to me. A product I like, more moderately priced than brick but more convincing than metal or vinyl siding is Hardie Board lap siding. Check it out at [http://www.jameshardie.com/siding.htm]. Texas product. Any carpenter can install it, you can paint it to your liking, and it is durable.
