I have a customer that wishes to have their standard threshold replaced with limestone. If anyone has any tips or tricks I would be happy to hear them.

I openned this thread thinking, "How nice! A marble or granite stool - a unique and long wearing idea!"
But I'm not so excited about limestone. It'll be good to hear from the stone guys. I know limestone is more porous and more brittle than many other stones, neither of which are ideal for an exterior situation.
How did he come to choose it instead of another?

Limestone....I've seen outdoor benches made out of the stuff.
Kindof reminds me of beige concrete.
As for a threshold, I guess it would work ok and maybe less expensive to fabricate then marble or granite.
But if it is for an exposed entrance, wouldn't it be a bit too porous ?
It probably will be due for a replacement earlier then granite or marble.
If sandstone is what they want, how about lowering the cost even more and suggesting concrete ?
I have no idea what I am talking about, ofcourse.

I like to use quarzite for thresholds. Very hard stone, not porous. Nice and shiny. always gets attention. Nothing I hate more than having a boring stone doing a special job. Limestone seems more likely to get chips along its edge.
Cut it to shape with a diamond saw and/or angle grinder with a diamond blade in it. Be sure to consider any aprons or overhangs when cutting the width.
Here's a limestone sill at an entry. The kick, and blocks to each side are limestone as well. I've done a few of these for customers using local limestone. Here's what it looks like, you can decide on whether or not to use it.

Calvin, I'm taking the liberty to link to this in the architectural details in the gallery. Let me know if it's not OK and I'll pull it. It's too good to pass up..
