Hi guys…this is Tris’ wife again. I’m trying to figure out how to go independant on this (ie. get my own user-ID, name, account, whatever) but I seem to be struggling a bit. Don’t want to be tagging along on Tris’ name all the time. Everytime I try to register in my own name I get onto the site under his. Help!
I do have a question about finishing, by the way. I’ve bought a can of melamine paint (love the way it goes on) and would like a suggestion or two on how to store the brush. Do I have to clean it each time or can I put it in the freezer like I do with latex? I’m finding if I store it in an airtight bag it still hardens a bit. Ideas?

if I recall correctly, melamine paint is oil based paint. oil based paint is the only paint you can store in the freezer. if you do it with latex paint the paint gets gloppy and turns into a real mess. if you are happy with the results you get after storing a latex paint brush in the freezer you will love the results of oil based brushes stored in the freezer. (obviously you need to wrap it in plastic, and oil paint will not freeze, it will just evaporate very slowly, so it is only effective to store the brush over night or up to about 24 hours.)

hi rez,
melamine is a cabinet paint, quite durable and a little thicker than latex. I have been using it for trim, shelves, and on some wainscotting that my husband covered my bathroom cabinets for. It finishes really nice, especially if you roll it on. The only things I don't like about it is the stronger smell, and the paint thinner clean-up.
I have a friend who told me she painted some really old countertops in her bathroom with it, and loved it. I'm not so sure it's that durable, but if it works, why not!
I bought mine at a local paint store (General Paints) but I am sure that it can be found in any paint store. Try Home Depot?

Are you in Canada?
Whevever I have heard of people mentioning melamine paint they have been in Canada and when I have searched the internet I only found Canadain suppliers.
I wonder if there is a different term for it in the US.
Likewise I often see people mention LePages adhesives. While I remember that brand from years and years ago as used in schools and it came with a rubber tip with a slot to aply it I have not seen it for 40 years and when I did a search for LePages I appears to be only available in Canada.

She probably is.
'Cause seems everytime I want something you can only get it outside the US.
Tried to find a metal primer containing zinc. Sure, in New Zealand.
Hi rez,
New Zealand, heh? My friend is flying out for New Zealand today. Just curious, do you guys have Home Depot there?

Hi Bill,
Yes, I'm from Western Canada. I don't know what to suggest except that maybe you could find out if there is another term for melamine. In all honesty, I'm not too sure if it is a brand name or a type of paint like "latex". On the front of my paint can it looks as if it is the brand name.
Okay, I've just run upstairs to check out the label again, and (I may be showing my paint stupidity here but...) it says 'urethane' and something is partially covered by paint drips and then it says 'alkyd'. Can you tell that I don't do this professionally?
hope that helps!

I just did a google on melamine paint and General paint was the first that came up.

Thanks Kim,
I've been using those little appliance paint bottles for touching up melamine. I'll give this stuff a try.
