I’ve been doing some reading on this fine site. I’ve just started a new house and my original plans were to frame with 2×4, then do 1/2″ Hi-R sheathing over the 2 x4. I have that configuration in my existing house and I am pretty happy with it. I noticed on this site most folks are down on FG batts (I live in CT) and seem to be bullish on blown-in insulation. That aside, for another thread, would folks recommend that I put strapping over the Hi-R sheathing, and if so why ( easier to plumb/level perhaps) ?
Also 1/2 or 1″ on the Hi-R ?
Thanks in advance for your help. The folks on this forum are true craftsmen.

Perhaps it will catch someone's attention that can help you with advice.

I'm certainly not one of the knowledgeable folks around here, but I think I can anticipate a general dislike of non-structural sheathing, a suggestion that you search for "Mooney wall" on the site here, and a further suggestion that you go through Mike Smith's astoundingly educational "Adverse Conditions" thread in the Photo Gallery.

Hi-R ???
poly iso foil faced foam???
strapping creates an air space that reduces conductive(?) heat loss.
also 3/4 is small enuf to limit convection loops (more heat loss)
and... also provides breating space for siding (helps fight mold etc.)
plus it is nice to be able to see your nailing for your siding.

I was actually thinking of putting the HI-R sheathing on the inside of the walls.

An air space on the inside will also be beneficial as will the visible nailing.

thank you - so mainly it provides a nailing surface. The reason I ask is that I am trying to decide the thickness of the HI-R that I will be going with -- if I go 1/2 or so then I figured no need for nailers - but if I go thicker - say an inch then I figured I would need the nailers so I am trying to weigh the benefits vs the costs.
Thanks again
