I am building my next spec house with structural insulating panels. I am looking for some experience with attaching cedar siding to a panel. The manufacturers say it’s ok to nail siding directly to the panel but I’m a bit wary. I’ve always hit studs with traditional framing. Screws would be a better choice but nailing with a siding gun is alot less time consuming. So my question is for those of you who have done it. Any problems, callbacks, words of wisdom? Thanks for your time.

I recommend that you use a spiral shank or ring shank nail. I have had good success with both.In addition, increase the frequency of nailing by 20-30% and be glad you don't have to look for a stud. Most importantly, DO NOT use house wrap. It's a waste of money not only because the panels don't need a wrap, but also the tanins in cedar will cause a steady breakdown of housewrap. I suggest a simple and inexpensive layer of 15lb felt. Good luck, AL
