I’m designing a new house in Portland, OR. with some stucco (real, not synthetic) on the exterior. We were considering the use of 1×2 battens or perhaps a cedar breather product in order to create an airspace between the stucco and the tarpaper wrap on the exterior of the sheathing, the concern being that stucco inevitably will develop some small cracks, and will also absorb and hold moisture, and an airspace reduces the likelihood of water infiltration. Does anyone ever do this, or are we heading toward infinite overkill? Thanks for first hand experience.
