I’m looking for feedback on how you would frame the substrate for wood beams in a coffered ceiling. The attached file xD01COFFER.PDF shows one way I have detailed this with 2×4 framing.
However I’ve considered making the substrate a 3/4″ plywood box as shown in xD02COFFER.PDF.
Thoughts?

I am a fan of plywood. Use your ply box alternate. The block inside the top needn't be continuous. Get some dry flat CDX, and start ripping.
Amen to the ply structure. And I believe you'll get a better job, faster.
I`ll make it unanimus....to this point anyhow! Plywood box as I think solid stock lumber will react to changes in humidity, not to mention its initial drying out. No need to have such a weighty substrate hanging overhead.

Some reasons to use plywood is that its light and also it wont split. You can rip it to any widths you want.
I also plan on doing a coffered ceiling in my 322 year old house I bought and that was exactly my plan. Plywood. Please post pictures as you go along.
Also, I plan on running speaker wire through it all as well as some electrical. Think about that if necessary
Good luck and have fun

One more thing I thought of after posting....and you may consider it overkill....being as you are not wrapping plywood box completely in solid wood, but rather applying mouldings to "hide" box...perhaps rabbeting the edges and glueing up the corners where plywood meets would make for a stronger joint. It may help to keep the boxes square. Just a thought...I always like to error on the side of caution.J. D. Reynolds
