We are planning to build a new home. Our home will be facing south. We would like to know if a 6 foot patio/overhang at 8 ft. high is too much overhang for sunlight to pass through? We live in the north/eastern part of Nevada with an elevation level of 6500 ft. We are able to enjoy the four seasons. We would like to allow the sunlight to enter our home in the winter while shading it somewhat in the summer.

Two web site to check out ...

Wither will tell you the angle of the sun in your location at various times of the year. Get the info for your location. Now draw an elevational section of the south face of your home, showing the overhang. Draw in the sun angles for January and July. Alter the overhang in your drawing, and the window height, to get the effect you want.

Thanks for the help Bruce!

FHB had an article specifically on this about 2 or 3 years ago.
At the time on the front page of the FHB web site they had a link to some more information on this. And I think a video of a mockup of a house.
That is probably still there, but you need to go through the "extra" or whatever it is called on the left side of the screen.
Bill,
Thanks for the info! Isn't FHB great!

All the same except 4' overhang.

The 6' overhang is gonna block most of your winter sun.

Cloud,
Very cool graphics. Que programa, por favor.Alan Jones
Thanks. VectorWorks.
Cloud Hidden,
Thank you for your reply. The graphics are great! The graphics give us a really good idea of what we are up against. We are thinking a 4 ft overhang is going to be just about right.
How did you come up with Ely, NV?
Thank You!
Chuck
What else is up there? If you check out the pictures in the Volunteer Firedept you'll see what those winters are like in Ely.
Been there twice years ago for a race. Cars were on the High School football field, the fire dept is next to it. They were the bar, spent some time in there BSing with them. Nice little town in the fall, don't think I'd want to spend a winter there.

Joe H,
We think Ely is great! It's very peaceful. The people are friendly and it is a safe place to live. The econcomy here right now is not the greatest. It's a little mining community. The mines are down. We have one mine and it is actually located in Elko County. The employees from here commute by bus. We also have a maximum security prison. It's really interesting the economy is poor, but the real estate is moving. I understand we are becoming a retirement community. Alot of people from Las Vegas and California are moving in. Then their family and friends tend to follow. I'm curious to see what will become of it. I'm hearing they are moving here to get away from the traffic and the heat. As I mentioned before, we are able to enjoy the four seasons. Our winters are not what they used to be. The winters are much milder and our summers are hotter. If your into hunting, fishing, camping, outdoors whatever this is the place to be. Another fantastic tourist attraction is the train. The train travels to Ruth, NV where the Kennecott Copper Pit used to be and then their is the Hiliner ride which is north of Ely towards McGill where the Kennecott Copper Mine was located. We celebrate Rail Days in September during Labor Day weekend along with the ultralight rides. We still have the races too! The two big races, the silver classic challenge are in May and in September, and don't forget we have our newly built local race track. You will have to come back to Ely and join in the fun.

You mean that's actually where you live?!?!?! Sheet, you musta become real paranoid when I said that's what I used for the solar calcs. I sure woulda. Rest assured I have no super-sleuth skills that let me hack back through your ISP or anything. Just used the most eastern choice from http://www.bcca.org/misc/qiblih/latlong_us.html#NEVADA That's sorta funny, right? right? :)
We think Ely is great!
Sounds like it. As you have 4 seasons, bear in mind that summer overheating is generally from western sun in the afternoon. We rely on deciduous trees to prevent that, probably not much of an option for you.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Chuck, I thought it was a great town too, except for what the locals were saying about winter & the pictures to prove it.
I drove around it pretty thoroughly & it is a nice old place. It's a bring your job with you place, but sounds like it's changing like a lot of other small towns in the West. Us Californians are bailing out big time.
It's been a long time since I was there, the last time was the last year of the race before it was changed to a rally type format. Some moron in a Testarossa killed his wife and blamed the race organizers for his own stupidity. That was the end of the race as it was.

It was the closest thing to Northern and Eastern in NV that was listed on the Lat/Lon listings I use.
Glad the pix helped.
