For all of you that rely on traditional lumber yards, what are some likes and dislikes about both the company and your salesman? Is anything unique about them that you don’t see elsewhere? If you ran the company, what would be different? What would you do differently if you were a salesman there?

My only gripe about my local yard is that they close the yard from noon til 1pm. I like to consolidate my trips from the job site, so picking up materials while out for lunch makes sense to me, but I often have to wait til the yard guys get back.

If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?
some of the guys picking stuff don't know sh_t, what's even worse, they just started a checker, at the exit, last year, this dude is supposed to make sure you got the right stuff? HA. many times sent a go fer to get something on will call comes back with the wrong stuff.
no turn left unstoned
Of the three guys that are behind the counter, once in awhile the only one there is the one that doesn't know anything. That's still my only complaint.

I think something that we all like at the yards is knowing the guys. And they knowing you. Whether its how a project is going to how are the kids doing. The folks over at HD or other boxes might recognize you (if you stand there long enough, or are tired/too busy and have sh@# to do, and make an "appropriate comment"), but it's a definite 'in and get out' type of deal.
I don't know about you guys, but I wish the supplier was open just a few more hours, either am or pm for me. Usually out the door about 5:30, jam to the site, and go till evening (especially the daylight this time of year). Then come on back thru town to see they closed at 6:00 pm, and its an hour or so past. So it's a late start tomorrow, or go over to HD after dinner, only to see the same contractors in the aisles doing the same thing at 10:00+ pm. (At least it isn't a zoo then)
The sales folks have been great, especially for special orders and lumber $ fluc's. I know that I can get a call while working to let me know when it will be there,. (A little piece of mind). As far as supply houses, knowing that I can send a customer over there, unescorted, to pick thier lights, plumb, whatever; and to be taken care of; with a follow-up call/fax to me is great. But throw in what the customer saw at HD or whatever.....(Lets not start that....)
