I’m looking at a job that involves removing 12′ of wall. The homeowner wants to make one big room. The height of the opening will be 8′. I’m considering a double 2×6 beam because of the span. I don’t want cracks due to gravity. I considered just adding blocks in between the studs after cutting the opening, but that seems half-a**ed. I’ve included two pictures, one of each side of the wall.
The existing wall goes from floor to roof. the shelf shown in the one picture is at 10′. Thanks in advance.

Dave,
First of all the pics are too big to see. Try using http://WWW.IRFANVIEW.COM to shrink the sizes down.
I wouldnt try and determine that myself unless you've done this dozens of times before.
I'd pay a fee to an engineer to determine the loads it will be holding up.
A dbl 2x6 sounds way to small to me unless its not holding any weight...does it support any of the roof load?
Be well
