If you’ve got piles of copper laying around, now is a good time to take them in. I had a few pieces of 1/2″ copper pipe and received $28 for it.
I scanned their price list. It is dated “4/25/2006” but it was picked up 5/30/2006.

John,
News article here in Dallas about a large church losing their AC units.
They had church members doing security, but thieves still made off with a large number of the units.
Lot of expense to property owners when the crooks only want the copper.
Not enough crooks are "nailed", as in shot.
Pete
I read recently of a number of churches in Quebec having their roofs stolen.
And earlier this week the power company found, as a result of a power outage, a dead thief that was trying to cut the wires from a substation. I wonder if he qualifies for a Darwin award? If I had any copper I'd hold it for a while because the price will keep going up.
>>>>>>>>>>>>If I had any copper I'd hold it for a while because the price will keep going up.If you keep it 'til the year 2525 you'll probably ahve enough to retire on......................

Great old song.
I snagged some of the lead pipes from the demo yesterday. At a penny a pound, I'll turn it into plugs for flashing brick, I find it better or easier than using tabs or CU scraps.
We're all dried in and solderd up, any good Cu and big useable scrap is in the garage on site..safe.
Uh, ya shorted us that 16'' of gutter pan..but tween the stuff we had for end blocks, and some fancy soldering, we pulled it off.
Hope yer feeling OK for the weekend.

I wonder why the price of copper sheet is different than copper tube???
>>>>>>>>>>Uh, ya shorted us that 16'' of gutter panApparently I didn't understand the drawing. Box gutter is the hardest thing to translate from one person to another. I've finally figured out Dale's diagrams, but I'm still having trouble with yours and Josh's. But, your dimensions are much more legible and I could tell that it was an inside miter rather than an outside (I knew already, but your drawing made that clear- sometimes it's not). I'm feeling mo' betta. I'll have both those planes ready for Mon. cheers.

That looks like my windshield, except most of my damage is on the driver side.
Had a guy get blown up here in Dayton today. Cut a 13.5kv line for the copper. Well I don't know if he cut it, but he got close enough. Cops found him hiding, 40% buned, still smoking. Town went dark for a while, crook is in the hospital.
Thief Nearly Kills Himself Trying To Commit His Crime

Power is out in part of downtown Dayton after a thief got shocked while trying to pull-of his crime. Police said it happened when a man used a saw to try to cut through a utility pole near the intersection Washington Street and Louie to steal copper. But he cut too deep, hit wires, and shocked himself, burning nearly 40 percent of his body. Not only did the man nearly kill himself, his antics have caused a number of problems downtown. Power is out along Washington Street and Fifth Street. Power outages were also reported on sections of the Sinclair Community College campus. "It appears that he didn't know what he was cutting. He was just after the copper. We've had some electrical problems for the last three or four days in this area. whether it's connected, we don't know at this point," said District Fire Chief Mark Whisman. The unlucky would-be thief is suspected to survive.

He'll probably sue the utility co. for not posting a warning for possible electrical shockif you try to cut down said pole. Bad thing about it he will probably win.
Umm, errrr..that WAS the drivers side of an Ele. onsite today. See, he was parked away from the scaffold, he was asked to move for the trash container truck..so he parked there.
We hadda saw and battery part ways on the 4th brace or so going down...they were interconnected when the incident occured.
We had it perched. We had to bang around a bit on our seams, we dropped the saw.
The Ele was /is a helluva nice dude, and he had new windshield b4 4:00, installed.
Hell, let'em try to steal our roof..it's on real good, and I get paid to do it again.....steal away MF's, Steal away.

Ok, mines smashed on the passenger side where a tree limb nailed it, and the wiper arm, and the antenny.
My bad. Every Ohio driver here in KY thinks it is Englund ( Note to Splinter) and Drives about in the middle 3/3rds of my cartway and have SUV's w/o signals and really heavy foot.

Yeah, they do that here. Funny thing is probably 80% of Dayton population is from Eastern Kentucky, or are descendants of them.
Wow..there is an Eastern KY? (g)

Actually... Judging from your jobsite accidents and injuries, coal mining might be safer.
ommodities never go up indefinitely. the pries rise and fall in cycles. low pries for awile make it unprofitable to develope new sources, so no new mines are explored and no new mills built. Then suddenly the world realizes they need more than there is available on the market and they bid each other up aand up in price, until it iss suddenly very profitable to be mining them. but the ccycle takes time. - aa year to five years to develope a producing mineral extraction. In four years you could see prices going back down again.

>>>>>>>>>>>ommodities never go up indefinitely. the pries rise and fall in cycles.Maybe, but in 20 years I've never seen copper actually go down. It goes up 20% then gradually comes down 10%. This cycle repeats over and over. It sometimes comes back close to where it was 6 months ago, but then goes up again.

six months is not a cycle in commodities (metals) terms. A short cycle might be a couple years for grains.Metals cycle at about 12 to 20 years. Notice it's been over 20 years since the last time gold was climbing the charts. The largest copper mine openning in the world today is going to take about four years to get into full production. Whether prices fall after that will depend on how world demand is shaping up.Another point to conmsider in your mention that it never goes back down alll the way, is that eighty cent copper in the eighties is like $3.20 of so copper today, simply because of doller devaluation.

>>>>>>>>>>>The largest copper mine openning in the world today is going to take about four years to get into full production. Well, the point of this thread is that there seems to be more "recycling" going on because of the increase in prices;)

What about those old transoceanic phone lines? The first one across the Atlantic, from the 1880's IIRC, went dead a long time ago. It contained some 378,000 tons of copper. Are they still there? If so, are they worth pulling up?

" The first one across the Atlantic, from the 1880's IIRC, went dead a long time ago"Hardly. The first telegraph cable was laid in 1858 and failed a month later.NY to Philly was the first LD phone line and that was in 1885.1915 was the first transcontintial line. The first transalantic cable was not until 1956.When I was a kid I used to have a bunch of Bell tech mags and they had in them the details of the cable. The cable had inline vacuum tube amplifiers. http://www.atlantic-cable.com/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transatlantic_telephone_cablehttp://www.att.com/history/milestones.html

Just on the news tonight in Toledo, Ohio, was a story about thieves taking the aluminum gutter covers used around the edge of the city pools. They think they are taking them for the scrap. The cost to replace them is now around $60,000, IIRC.

We turned an old commercial Montgomery Wards building into a climate controlled indoor storage business last year. Boss said to throw all the store front material (Heavy aluminum extrusion) into the roll off dumpster. I threw it into my truck and would drop it off every evening. Three trips in a '93 Nissan PU netted me a little under $900. Plus I saved the world at the same time....;-P
Wonder how much my $200 worth of pennies are worth now? Hmmmmmmmm
>>>>>>>>>>>>Wonder how much my $200 worth of pennies are worth now? HmmmmmmmmI think they started alloying pennies a long time ago so the scrap value would be significantly less than the face value. I'm not sure what they cut the cu with, but someone will google and chime in here soon.

In 1982 the composition of pennies was changed to 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper. Some 1982 cents were 95% copper, 5% zinc.
Zinc's pretty high now too.
Yep, I just bought 360 feet of 1" 'M' copper tubing for my deck ballisters @ $2.39/ft, and that price is the plumbing dealership's cost (my helpful neighbor owns the company). These and my skuppers and downspouts could fund a meth addict for the rest of the year!!
I wonder...can you chain a copper downspout to the house?
And why is lead so cheap?

That won't do any good. They'll just take the wire too.
Get enough voltage and you'll find them smoking.
