Does anyone sell taping compound in the Boston area? Everywhere I look, it’s all-purpose, light-weight, and topping. Does everyone just go with all-purpose or durabond if they want extra strength in a joint? I see USG makes it but does anyone actually use it?

Use all purpose.
If you can't find a good selection of drying and setting type drywall joint compound, try one of the "big box" stores. They definitely stock a variety of products, and if the product you want is not in stock, you can order it for in-store pickup.
Been finishing for a long time. In the 70’s we’d bed tape and top with All Purpose bucket mud. When Durabond became available it was bed with that and top with bucket mud. For the past 20 or so yrs it’s been bed with Durabond and subsequent coats with Easysand. Minutes more mixing but quicker drying and redcoat time with the powders.
Decent hung board with either paper or fiber tape should not need something more. By the way, what do you mean by “taping compound” ?
I mean drying-type joint compound designed specifically for bedding tape. Supposedly stronger and better adhesion than all purpose and comes pre-mixed.

I think you have Kamco up there? That's who we go to in CT for specific drywall products.
