Giving credit where it is due;
Between your FHB article a while back on window trim and your recommendation of the Kreg Jig we just pulled off a trim detail that I otherwise would not have known how to do.
The homeowner is delighted, the crew is stoked, and I’m grateful.
Here’s to ya!

Thanks, you guys. But seriously, thank the magazine for giving us all a forum to exchange ideas. Any of you could write articles. Just think about something basic and get in touch with an editor. That's the stuff they are always looking for. As for the writing, the editors do most of that. All you have to come up with is an idea for a topic at the right time, and they take care of the rest.
Of course, it also helps if you have an Australian photographer working with you. <g>

gonna buy 5 copies for my mother..."
Jim is a great carpenter and a gracious friend. He's also right that we're always looking for new authors, and that you don't need to be a great writer for us to work with you. You just need to have some good ideas. (Jim, btw, in additon to his other attributes, is a good writer. He's also probably pretty embarrassed about now <G>)Andy Engel, Forum moderator
As a former editor who has returned to the field, I'd like to offer yet a little more encouragement following Andy's post.
Everybody who participates here is an expert at something -- guaranteed. Something that you do so often and so easily that you don't give it a thought. It is equally certain that there are a few thousand readers (just like you and me) who could put that knowledge to use.
For example, the motivation behind my original post thanking Jim. I just didn't have any idea how I was going to make this trim detail that my client requested actually work (i.e. looks good, doesn't cost a fortune).
I got thinking about some things that Jim had mentioned here and in his article, and it all came together. This was probably all second nature to Jim, but it made all the difference for me, and my client.
As for the editorial process, don't worry about it, even if you think you can't write. I don't know of a better group of people to work with than the editors at FHB. These guys really know their stuff, both in the field and at the desk, and they all have a pretty good sense of humor, too.
The more people who participate, the better it gets for everyone. It's a fun process, and the first time you get to buy a new tool with a check from Taunton Press you might just find yourself thinking about ideas for that next article. <G>

Joe, you can't just submit your stuff to "The Head Bozo of FHB" and expect him/her to publish it ;)<G>
I'm smilin' when I'm sayin' that!...

I'm dissapointed to hear that, Joe. Even though we dissagree on some things, I still think you have as much or more to offer the building world as many of the FHB contributors, and I think you genuinely want to offer folks some good ways to do things...but don't get too personal out here on the web, or this thread'll get wacked too. Hey, have you thought about a pen name? Plumb Bob? Hameryn Nayle? Hip Raphter?

I did, Joe. That was nice, but it was Danielle's idea, wasn't it :)? Guess i'm just naive about the publishing world, just figured good information didn't matter who it came from...anyway, your formula helped fake out the clients (they figured I knew what I was doing cause I had a FORMULA), helped me finish a job beautifully and make the homeowners want more...so the thanks should be coming from me...like these bozos say, Tanks...
Andy
Well then take my story from the thread Famous Blunders about building my Tipi up top a mtn in Virginia for the last page of FHB......<G>
Be well
