Is it the code where you build such that insert fireplace framing boxes (for Heatilator, Superior, Heat’N’Glo, Majestic, etc.) and their flue chases are lined, on the inside, with sheetrock, and that minimum clearance from any of the unit or its fluepipe surfaces be 2″. I have some bozo that sells and installs these units telling me this. He looks up at my second deck I-joists and says, “I’ll need to trim back the flanges on those two where the pipe will go between so I can face the webs with sheetrock and get my minimum 5/8″ thickness and 2″ clearance.” I go crazy, and tell him that he WILL NOT EVEN SHAVE any structural members. None of the installation manuals from any of these manufacturers say anything about this. This guy wants me to frame the box with bigger dimensions than the manufacturer specifies, so that he can get his 5/8″ sheetrock and 2″ clearances. What’s up? We are building in Lake Placid, New York.
