Hello,
I am in need of some help.I had some doors that I replaced the full mortise hinges on.The new hinges are thinner than the old ones so I shimmed em’ out with some cardboard. However the doors are now not closing all the way. They get about 6-8″ away from the jamb and bounce back.Do I shim the jamb leaf out or the door leaf?Or perhaps take out a shim? This sort of thing tends to drive me nuts!Is it perhaps the hinges need to be the original thickness?I await you answers. Thanks Dan

Dan , the mortises are still to deep . You can shim some more , get thicker leaf hinges or try what I read in an article on door hanging by Gary Katz . He opened the door and put the head of a nailset between the leaves and gently forced the door closed until it sprung the hinges . He was actually doing this to adjust the reveal on the lock side but it should work to get rid of the hinge bind . Chuck
*There and three possibilities. First see Chucks response. Second the hinges and binding on themselves. In this case you need to shim the hinges more on the edge of the door or jamb closest to the pivot. This will angle the plates of the hing a little and it will not bine on itself. Third the door is hitting the stop. If this is so you will hve to move the stop or reset the hinges. Look at the door as it moves and see where it is binding before you try to fix it.
