I’m jumping in on Mikes suggestion; let’s start the ball rolling. The book is “The Goal”, by Eliyahu Goldratt. Written as fiction, it’s the story of a plant manager who is told his plant will close unless he makes it profitable in a very short time.So he has to rexamine every aspect of how the plant does business, and gets some good guidance (by way of the Socratic method) from a guru who makes him question all recieved wisdom. It’s set in a manufacturing environment (which is fine for me), but it applies to all if you are flexible enough to imagine the same scenario in your world.
The Goal (of a BUSINESS) is: to make money, now and in the future.
To do that, you have to eliminate bottlenecks (or constraints; hence, the Theory of Constraints (TOC). There is a ton of info on this on the net, if anyone is interested). One constraint that we are all familiar with, for example, is sales. That’s one example of how the book applies to everyone.
If anyone wants to write a better setup, have at it, and I’ll delete this.
