I heard that the reason plywood jetted up a few years ago was because after Hurricane Andrew (?-gee I hope so, fits with the post) in Florida the demand was so great and the Govt. was funding alot of the rebuilding, the Man-ufacturers all decided they could jack up the price 20%.

Re an earlier discussion here, note that USG posted an open letter on their site regarding the drywall shortage. They say they're running their plants 7-24.
P.S. their net earnings are up 28% too.
*Andrew,I don't know if this is a fairy tale or not...but I was informed by my drywall supplier that the reason for the shortage (Beside the obvious boom in demand) was that the manufacturers closed 4 plants for a revamp at the same time rather then build a new one for the same price. The high demand and mild winters ate through the reserves and well, here we are. I hope this ends sooner then six months because it is a real pain in the a**.Richard Max

I think they're using a lot of it in the construction of the International Space Station.
Plus, with all the fires on MIR, they're sending a bunch up to it so they can double-up the thickness of the walls, to get that extra fire rating. Problem is that the Russian black market seems to be getting ahold of everything that's supposed to be sent to MIR, thus the shortage.
What a job that would be, holding 96 pound sheets of rock in place with a fingertip.
I read all about it in The Roswell Adventurer. It's on page three right after the alien story. No kiddin'.
