Lots of yellow jackets flying around the soffitt. Decided to declare war. Armed with two cans of spray (oh, yeah, the soap thing didn’t work – thank you very much) I soon got stung (again). Much to the amusement of my lady (watching comfortably in a lawn chair at a distance, And wishing she had the video camera!
Back at night with a hook on a pole I pulled the soffitt down. Along with a nest the size of a soccor ball. The next morning I started round three. They really don’t like the sound of a shop vac. More running around.
So, I fastened a section of PVC pipe to the hose and hung the contraption (DIY device I might add) from the edge of the roof next to their old home. No better sound (ok, opening a beer is first) than the little “pip” as yet another bee hits the flex pipe on his way into the shop vac. When the action slowed down, I would beat on the area with a LONG stick.
Oh yeah, spray some nasty stuff into the shop vac before dumping it out!
Cheers,

get em'! just got stung by one at night! A+ for creativity, and thanks for the laugh!
Had a little batle with some hornets yesterday myself. They had a nest in the counter weight space.
I didn't have any spray, so I spray painted them. They did't really like that at all.
It took two aplications and removal of the nest thingy. Hope they are not out there today!
I am dealing with hornets as we speak trimming some lower branches on an oak and see sap running then see about ten hornets landing on the sap and flying off. They were not to happy about me and my wife got the same laugh sitting on the new lawn rocker on the front porch watching me deal with dive bombing hornets.

I'm a huge fan of the shop vac. Last year I had a yellow jacket nest at the sill plate ,. I'd bang on the wall, turn on the shop vac and I counted 100 bees at one sitting. The only problem is it only delays. When you get rid of the adults, enentually the youngsters grow up.
Its really funny to watch though

I read about a guy who blew himself up by spraying some flammable bug killer into a running shop vac.

Yeah, but the bees were still killed in the process, that was the goal and the goal was acccomplished, that's all that matters here I think
If at first you don't succeed, try using a hammer next time...everything needs some extra persuasion from time to time. -ME

I imagine that took care of his yellow jacket problem....
'recently noticed a spider web in the eaves of a shed I built a little while ago. Smart spider - it was built reight underneath a small wasp nest. A couple of days ago, it was fascinating to watch a spider vs. wasp battle. With great satisfaction, I cheered when the spider won.
I suspect you may have a contraption here that will generate lots of revenue for you if you patent it. It could be sold in the shop vac accessories section.
But he just publically disclosed it, so for the purposes of a U.S. patent he started a 1-year clock. He'd have to file a patent application within the next year, or lose U.S. patent rights.
He's lost all foreign rights, unfortunately, which requires application filing before public disclosure. ;)
Heck, by the time I thought of it probably a hundred more have been using the same for years!
lol-
experiment with 409 killing them. it works on flies, big gnarly wood roaches and other bugs. dazes them first and takes about a minute, but works 100%. and i like it because it's not flammable, particularly stinky or quite as toxic as real bug sprays.
still, if you see them cawling towards an escape, beat 'em dead with a stick: we don't want no bugs evolving into 409 immunity.
MSM,I'll try the 409 on another small nest in progress.
cheap hair spray works great ... sticks their wings together before they suffocate.

Jeff,Sounds like a good product for the latent fliers.Hold a match near the nozzle and you have a blow torch.
The shop vac works on bats too.
That would be quite a "thunk" when the bat gets sucked in.
That's how I could tell when they were in there. I would drive them miles away and release them, they probably got home before I did.
