I want to tile the landing at the top of the basement stairs. There is a vinyl sheetgood floor covering there now. I would use 1/4″ Hardibacker, so the top step would be about the tile/thinset thickness higher than the other steps. Obviously, not an ideal situation. I was thinking about installing a wooden “threshold” about the width of a tread. It would be thick enough on the step side to even out the top riser and taper up to the tile thickness. This would solve my riser problem, but it may seem a little too wide to look right.
Do you folks have any suggestions for either improving on my idea or perhaps taking a whole different approach? Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Kyle

Tile doesn't work very well on standard stairs with only two supports. Too much flex.
