I have tile shower that was built circa 1968. I’m pretty sure it’s a traditional “mud job”.
The floor, which is 1″ sq. tiles, is leakproof, but looks pretty bad after all these years of use and cleaning. Basically, the glazing is partially worn away, which not only looks bad but makes cleaning difficult. Plus the styling is 30+ years old.
Would it be possible to lay out new tile over the old? ‘seems like that would save alot of work, and it seems a shame to disturb a currently leakproof installation.
How about the walls, which aren’t in bad shape, but styling is dated?

I had exactly the same problem a number of years ago. I started removing the tile, but it was way too much work. I went to a big tile store, explained the situation, and they sold me some epoxy modifed mortar and the tiles. It made a beautiful job and the new tiles stuck real well. With respect to the walls, I would remove the tiles. It is easier to do and you will avoid all the problems with things like soap dishes, shower doors, etc., due to the extra thickness.
