I’m starting the design work for a covered patio that will be about 22′ wide and 30′ long out from the main house. I going to do a 6/12 vaulted roof with t&g cedar lid. I will be roughsawn supporting post and beams on a colored concrete slab.
My question is at every 10′ I’m going to build a 6x truss with Mortise and Tennon joints to act as collar ties to the outside beams. Thier going to be more for look than supporting the roof stucture.
I always wanted to play with doing some timber framing. Are there any books that show and teach the techniques of layout and making the cuts and joints? Most of the Timber frame books I’ve found only show what you can do, not how to.

I'd recommend Tedd Benson's first book (and his best, imho), Building the Timberframe House: The Revival of a Forgotten Craft and Steve Chappelle's book; A Timber Framer's Workshop: Joinery & Design Essentials For Building Traditional Timber Frames. Both are good on the how- to's.
Thanks jc !
I'll look them up.
This article gives an excellent overview of heavy timber trusses, their uses and advantages.
