I don't know, should you buy a blue car or a red one? Should you vacation in Aspen or Alaska? Should you build a colonial or a ranch? In other words, there are a tremendous number of variables in a question like yours not the least of which is personal taste and budget, then maybe factor in architectural detailing of home, wood species on floors (is there wood on floors), location of home, paint colors, decorating scheme.....I could go on and on and on and on

why not do both? install the hardwood, then paint that. <g>!
listening for the secret.......searching for the sound...
I live in the deep south , very deep. Mint julep and the works. winter here is 55 degrees. Well all trim down here is painted white, everything. when my painting contractor came in he started to paint the trim white. I wanted plain pine, because of an argument here about six months ago. it was like world war three, nobody ever heard of unpainted trim.It was arging with a mule, he was going to paint it white no matter what I said.
I guess ever region has different taste.
I vote for unpainted wood
