can anybody recomend a toolbag with lots of small pockets deep enough to hold mostly chisels, screwdrivers, tapemeasures etc., tools geared more for finish carpentry,

The only thing I've found that works well for small tools are the "rigger's bags" that are made of (off-)white canvas, open topped, with lots of pockets on the outside. I have, I think, four of them, each with tools for a different job -- wiring, plumbing, woodworking, and tile/masonry.
Something like this: http://cspoutdoors.com/canrigbag.html
(Of course, some people aren't happy unless they spend a lot more for a bag.)
Bags
I have used several kinds. Duluth used to have a cloth bag-not many slots-I use one for drill motor/impact driver/bit box/drill index/countersinks/boring bits...............stud finder...............door ease tube...............
couple others like this for caulk/filler/sandpaper/tackrags.........
There were several cnc (or something like that) bags-seemed to be vinyl lined-these failed and stiffened up in cold weather. Bogus.
I bought the Veto Propac xxl bag. Best of the bunch and not cheap. One side slots for chisels, drivers, sets, pliers, etc.
other side for long stuff-wonder bars quickclamps, hammer, long screw drivers, short level, misc.
some small pouches for stick rule, scribes, outboard slots for scissors.............man a bunch of shit.
Now, if you were to put all that stuff in a bucket-it wouldn't fit, you couldn't find it and couldn't comfortably carry it. The veto bag is however not a problem. Heavy sure-but comfortable to carry by the handle. It has a strap I've never used. Can zip up the sides so everything's covered, or unzip and fold down for complete access. Takes a bit of time to find the right slots for your tool, but once you got it and keep putting it back in the same spot-you're golden.
Have seen a husky open bag that was big-but I didn't think it would hold as much.
New Veto xxl open top
Cal,
Went to the JLC show in Providence , met the infamous Mike Smith and picked up my 3rd Veto bag -- the XXL open to go with an LC closed and a XL open .
Might have even talked the inventor/owner into using my mug in some ads .
Check out the JLC thread in BT Classic .

Do me a favor when you talk to Roger-I've tried to get ahold of him b/4 through the veto site w/no luck.
Remind him how generous he was in '05 when he sent me a bag and some shirts for our Fest here at our place. See if you can squirrel away some bounty for the Rezfest in Saratoga Springs in July-I know you can find the Fest thread.
Now of course, that precludes you into sliding down for that weekend. I looked at the map and it's shorter from Maine to there than Ohio, so I'll expect no BS about maybe..........
So, you ask nicely of Roger (and anyone else you can find that generous) , go over to the Fest thread and commit and then start throwing qtrs in a jar to make the economic pain of the trip a little softer.
See you in July!
I followed the JLC thread and was glad to see it captured in pixels. Nicely done boys!
Cal,
If he was as serious as I was about me doing some print ads for them , when he gets in contact in April , I'll see what he says about Rez Fest loot !
Going in for another hip in a month so I'll be way behind on June 1 . I'll know better then how things will shake out .
I'll get whatever goodies to the Fest if he will produce any .

Thanks for your help. Best of luck, you know you've always been pretty hip.
I tried a Veto and sent it back. It didn't really have enough slots for what I wanted, plus the thing got too heavy too fast -- I'd rather split things between smaller bags.
If I was a finish carpenter, I'd think seriously about ditching my toolbag and making the toolbox on page 82 of this:

Here's the one I made based on this design:
Pics taken with a carpy phone cam, sorry.
BTW... in case you didn't know about it, ThisIsCarpentry is a pretty cool, and free, publication.
Would never work for me, but it does bring up the idea (why didn't I think of it before) of throwing a lightweight appliance dolly into the van to haul the stuff around.
Veto Propak XL and XXL
I have both the XXL and XL, and I must say I like the XL better. Although the XXL can hold long stuff (2' level), I acutally found most of the pockets too short to hold everything. I like the dimentions of the XL much better, the pockets can hold all kinds of things - wouldn't trade it for any other bag I've tried so far.
