Most HW tank T&P installations have a piece of 1/2″ pipe running a couple of vertical feet to near the floor level. Wouldn’t it be better to run it a few feet farther and terminate into a laundry tub? (or floor drain)
Then, if for some reason it “blows” there will not be a flood on your finished basement floor (carpet, etc)
Or is there a code law against doing this?

The pipe from the presure relief valve is to terminate just a very few inches, (??), from the floor. This is in case of the valve releasing it doesn't splash and scald someone. So if it terminated in a sink there would be a greated chance of scalding someone. That's the reason I am told.
