Anybody own the tracrac lumber/ladder rack? I’m in the market for a rack for my truck now that I have a taller garage door that truck and rack will fit through. The last truck had an Adrian Steel rack that was great, but I tempted to try the TracRac in case I decide to get a gooseneck trailer or need to remove the rear rack for a large item. I’ve only found one person that has had it, and he was a trim salesman that swore by it.
Thanks,

john... trac rac makes no sense to me... either you need racks or you don't.. and i like the over the cab racks anyways..trac rac's over the cab design is clunky
i got the new Adrain Stainless Racks..they have a nice foolproof mechanism for folding the rear crossbar out of the way..
BTW , i got it with a $1000 rebate from Ford when i bought our new truck

Mike,
Vanguard is gonna slap you throwing all their business to Adrian. Check out http://www.vanguardtruckracks.com and you'll see their catalog. They do refer to http://www.lynladtruckequipment.com if you're in their area.

a very confusing color brochure misled me..... big "Adrian Steel" logo..
and Vanguard... and LynLadder... who'd a known..
thanks for setting me straight...
so, what's it gonna be ? style vs. substance Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Mike,
Maybe style and substance.....possibly aluminum for style and a real rack for substance. I must admit the prices are kinda climbing up there. The last time I bought an Adrian rack it was just under $400 and now they're near $600! For the same money, I can get the Sys One (style and substance). If I just wanted substance I'd take the racks out in the yard custom made out of 2X2 steel, rework, and repaint them.

Mike,
You like your 7x14?
Boss got me a 6x12.
Gets kinda full when I get all my stuff back in it at the end of a job.
I was thinkin 7x14 would be just enough more room.
Is that a Wells Cargo?
When I did some research, the Wells cargo 7x14 was a nice in-between duty trailer.
heavier axles, springs and brakes than the smaller ones but not as heavy duty as the BIG ones.

t, it's a CarMate.. and i chose the 7' for the extra width.. and the 14' so i could get 12' stock inside..
we had a lot of discussion here before i bought it... at the end of that thread ,i knew just what i wanted... and it had changed a lot from when i started out..
lot's of experience here helped with that decision...
like the dual wheels, side door, double doors rear, e-track on the right side, etc.
we're really glad we got a trailer, it's been a big boost Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
If you want the best (imho) get a 'systemone' rack. They are aluminium so they are light weight and wont rust. They have a great carrying cappacity(1250lbs) and a nice built in ratchet strap. The rear cross beam comes off and there is a ton of acsessories. Check out the link there are other racks you can compare to.
John,
Go for the Ststem One Rack it is the best out there. Track Rack is a waste of money for the price they charge. System one has a ton of options more then Track Rack and the rachet system they have you can't touch. If you need material you wrap the strap around and tighten the rachet and you done and it's safe no bungee cords or ropes.
I also bought tool boxes that slide right on. You can always add on if you want with all the accessories they have. They are nice looking also. For the verticle supports if you want to match the color of your logo on your truck they have over 100 colors.

Boss has Track racks, keeps 'em in the forward position.
He would never admit to not liking them.
He don't need a truck or rack any hoo
I think he bought them for looks
If they work anything like the trac rac saw stand they are garbage!
I am an Aluminum Cap fan my self.
Got racks built right on it.
Carries evrything I can load on it.
Tools and such stay dry in the Cap.
1/2 the price of a Fiberglass cap & rack.
Not as pretty, But this is WORK not some freakin beauty pagent!!!Mr T

Man! I didn't know I would get slammed for saying the "T" word. I'm a bit skeptical of the TracRacs but I like the idea of the rear rack sliding forward or being easily removed if I decide to get a gooseneck trailer (trying to think ahead). I don't like the fact that the capacity is only 1000#. I guess I'll look at the System One or like I said, I was very happy with the Adrian Steel racks I had before (came free with the previous Chevy). I liked the Adrian racks so well that I bought them for three other trucks.
I just looked at the SystemOne website. They look nice but list price is $674! I'll look into them. I do like the no rust feature.
Thanks,

John,
You'll be happy with this rack but you should definitely get the rachet set up because it's worth every penny. The first time I used it I just shook my head and said that this is incredible how fast and easy it was to tie something down and never worry about bungees or rope. It's not that I go to the lumber yard every day but when you do it's nice and quick.
It's especially great for tieing down my ladders and picks.
Joe Carola
Joe ,
Where is the reciever hitch for that nice work truck?
Tim Mooney
Tim,
Nothing to pull so no hitch. I have a box truck where I keep everything I own.
These are the best racks that I've ever seen and owend though .

The TracRac setup really nice if you need/want flexibility. The sliding headache rack/load divider, and the toolbox sliders make life alot easier. Cantiver available for full length loads. Aluminum const- no rust, and they look great. 1000lb capacity.
Rack: $800
Toolbox sliders: $50
Cantilever: $250
Sliding headache rack/divider: $250
Total:$1350
System 1 is one of the best HD rack setups out there. Aluminum, 1250lb capacity, excellent tie down winches available.
Rack: $500
Headache rack: $100
Winches(4): $150
Total: $750
The choice is up to you based on your needs/priorities/budget.
IMPO, they're both excellent racks.
Mike
No help on the track rack...
but which adrian steel rack did you have, I'm going to order one for my new truck and just looking for a little feedback?
any rust or other problems?
Had the 1" X 2" rect. tubing rack. Nothing fancy but a great heavy duty rack. I like the fact that it had a continuous rail that rode atop the box to help distribute the weight. I remember that I once hauled 10+ 2X10-24 boards on that rack. Rust did show after about 3 years, but expected with a steel rack. They now offer white racks also....don't do it! The black hides the rust once it shows.
I also got the Adrian Steel saddle box with the upfit package. It's still a decent aluminum box 7 years later. I think the new ones are even better with a stiffer lid.
Good luck,
John

I'm getting weather gaurd steel boxes in black, I noticed they make white racks now and thought the same thing you just said they would show the rust and also dirt.
Think twice about steel boxes. Weatherguard makes great boxes but I'd go aluminum for the no rust feature. I've seen that some manufacturers make black aluminum if you want to stay black. I've got an excavator buddy that exclusively buys Weatherguard aluminum boxes and his boxes that are 15+ years old are still in excellent shape. I'm thinking that steel boxes would be on their third paint job by now.
My 2 cents,

I have a short bed extended cab silverado with a system one rack on it. The only way I could get away with the short bed was with the system one. I can take the whole thing on or off in about 15 mins by my self. have had no problems with it after 3 years. It's a real good way to go.
someone else here also spoke highly of system one
Framer or someone with a similiar name
After everything I've heard, I think I'm leaning toward the System One. How's the wind noise with the slots cut in the sides of the top rails?John

john.. i came real close to getting the System 1,... if it hadn't been for the Stainless Steel Vanguard.. that's what i would have done...
the aluminum looked a little light... but it seemed much more workable than the trac-rac.. and the over the cab extension was a plusMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Another great option is Kargo Master. I had these racks on my last truck and they were warriors. Black powder coated, never had a rust problem with 'em either. A whopping 1700lbs capacity was nice too. They too extend out over the cab. Wish I still had 'em but they don't fit the new utility body. Right around $750 if I remember correctly (but I'm not sure). Tie down cleats all over the place, water cooler rack, and cord/hose hangers were the options I picked out.
John
The racks do whistle a bit around 65mph but nothing a half way decent radio won't hide. When I travel in the truck I take the rack off. 8 bolts and the whole thing is sitting on the ground. The bed rails remain so you still have plenty of tiedowns. My only complaint is that the rear cross bar brackets remain on the legs leaving 2 major backstabbers above the tailgate. I put hand knobs on all the bracket connections so I can remove them if I have to, but don't expect the rear crossmember to remove as easily as those on a pipe style rack
Dave
Looks like I'm heading in that direction.....I'm thinking my diesel engine will hide the whistle. If not, I'll crank the radio.
Where's the best place to buy? Online or did you buy locally? I'm waiting for a response from SysOne to see if they have a local dealer.
Thanks,John

I called up System One on a monday morning and $750 later the rack showed up on Wed afternoon. They are in Pennington, NJ I think and I'm in northern VA ( I think) about a four hour drive. As far as I know they only deal direct. The whole setup weighs less than 120# which is a weight savings over steel or stainless. Load capacity is 1250#. There are a bunch of accesories available that let you fit it out anyway you want. Everything bolts to the rack with 5/16 stainless steel carriage bolts which slide into T-slots which are extruded into every possible surface on every extrusion. It's an incredibly flexible system.
At 120#, is your set up the 'contractors package' with the four work winches?
I have the contractors package but no ratchets. I did get a midspan crossmember which I don't use but I also ordered a package of accessories such as bucket hooks, side hooks and tiedowns. The 120# was based on the weight of the two packages but I would guess that minus the packaging and the stuff I don't have bolted on weight is a little under 100#.
They got back with me this morning and said the same thing. But if you check out http://www.worktrucksupply.com they sell it for $469 or $590 with all the winches plus $70 to ship. A little better than dealing direct.

I may be wrong about my cost. The base unit was $500.
Just his morning I ordered the System One from Worktruck Supply. I'm told that the whole rack can be removed in minutes. I don't have a gooseneck trailer, but I was trying to think ahead in case I got one.
Thanks for the response,

John,
It does remove in minutes. Before I put my tool boxes on I would just take the racks off on the job and leave them there and go get the truck washed and then put them back on the next day.
You'll be happy with these racks, there the best ones out there. Did you get the Ratchet Tie Downs?
Good Luck.
Joe Carola
I ordered the ITS Heavy Work Contractor Package which included the ratchet tie downs. I'll probably order a few of the sliding anchors shortly. I may also order the tool box risers (to raise up my saddle box for added clearance).
I'm glad you mentioned about the truck wash. I was worried that I wouldn't fit when I make my bi-annual mecca to the car wash.
