“We are thrilled that the Traditional Building Show is coming to NewOrleans,” said Patricia Gay, Executive Director, The Preservation ResourceCenter of New Orleans.”Nowhere in the world are historic buildings soabundant, but yet so threatened. The conference will inspire us even more to restore, renovate and re-build our homes using traditional — and enduring — techniques. We cannot wait for the show and are making plans already for all sorts of activities and events leading up to it.”
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed more than 200,000 homes and 18,000 commercial and public buildings in Louisiana, and countless more along the GulfCoast. With much of this region’s architectural and urban heritage devastated this may well have been the greatest cultural disaster in American history. But through the resolve of citizens, leadership from the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA) and billions in funding, the region is poised to come back stronger than ever.
Already, the LRA and Urban Design Associates have created the Louisiana Speaks Pattern Book. This tool for homeowners, builders and developers gives design guidelines to help preserve the region’s valuable character when rebuilding.“We are proud to partner with the Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference as it makes its return to New Orleans“, says LRA Executive Director, Andy Kopplin.”This event will provide thousands of citizens who are rebuilding and restoring their homes with techniques to maintain the architectural and cultural history of New Orleans and the GulfCoast“.
“Like so many Americans, we wondered how we could help,” said Peter H Miller, President of Restore Media LLC, the producer of the Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference.”When the New Orleans 2005 Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference was cancelled due to Hurricane Katrina, we knew our misfortune paled in comparison to the human suffering in the region.Throughout this past year our magazines have covered the contributions the traditional building industry has made to the rebuilding effort,” explains Miller.”Now, with the encouragement of New Orleans‘ city officials, local organizations and residents we will return. We are excited to produce an event that will serve as a forum for the rebuilding efforts of New Orleans and the GulfCoast. Join us!”
The Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference will collaborate with several important partners whose work in the region is already making a difference, including The Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans, www.prcno.org; AIA New Orleans, www.aianeworleans.org; The Louisiana Recovery Authority, http://www.lra.louisiana.gov/ and many more.

We can imagine something that only exists in our heads, in a form that has no measureable, tangible reality, and make it actually occur in the real world. Where there was nothing, now there is something.

Well, maybe. But how do you measure it against the other contenders, like the careers of, say, Liberace, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Roger Corman, Andy Warhol, Roseanne Barr, Kenny G, etc? If you were to take all of television as a single contender, Katrina wouldn't stand a chance.... ;-)
