We are faced with replacing one of our two 1949 forced air gas furnaces in our 1910 victorian style home. Our old furnaces are inefficient but are heavily built and that is why we have kept them in service. One of the units is dead. Our heating contractor who specializes in old houses recommends the following units: (1) A Trane TUY100R9V4 unit that is a variable speed two stage unit or (2) A Trane TUC100C948 XB90 single stage for $900 less cost. We do not use central air conditioning with either unit. Does anyone have good or bad experiences with either unit? Has anyone installed these units and realized a substantial savings in utility costs? Our house over 5,000 square feet and therefore expensive to heat.
Thanks,
Stan

I can't speak to the utility $ savings -- just replaced one of my furnaces with a multi-speed carrier condensing gas furnace -- but I do like the multi-speed feature. Much quieter when it doesn't need to run at full blast. For that alone I'd spend the extra $
