I’m trying to find a hinge that will let me swing open a trap door without being able to see the hinge when the trap is shut. The most obvious solution is a long piano hinge but this would be seen and tripped on when the trap was down. I’m trying to achieve a door that is flush with the the floor and yet opens easily to allow entry into the basement. Because of the way hinges work i need something that allows the 2’X4′ door to clear the opening. I’m thinking cabinet pocket hinges would do it as they have the right arc but they are too small. Does anyone know of large hinges that would do this?
Bassically the door is 2′ X 4’6″ . It wiil be around 1 1/2 ” thick but if neccessary it could be thicker.. The frame of the door is the depth of the joist (10″) so the hinge has to go from 90 deg., when closed to 180 + deg., when open. Or I could set it up so the hinge went from 0 deg., closed to 90 +deg open. ANy thoughts appreciated.
BTW this is what the client asked for “a clean look above and an easy access” I’m also looking to spring the door so that it lifts up easily.

Heavy duty Soss hinges.
WHat's a sass spring please and where do I get them?
Soss brand hinge are completly hidden by a full mortis. They can be had at better door harware supply houses or I would think Soss has a website.

What about a manufacturerd access door, and cover it with the appropriate material. Something like a Bilco maybe.
