Trying to get some thoughts together on how to add a tray ceiling as part of a MBR remodel. I am combining two adjacent BR’s into one and have to remove a load bearing wall between them. It was going to be fairly straightforward, keep the ceiling flat, add beam in attic, etc. but as long as I am at it if I could frame a tray ceiling instead …. You guys know the drill, mama gonna love me twice and that’s all the motivation I need. Tray ceiling defined as 2-3′ flat ceiling all around room and flat raised (1′ ?) section in center (roughly 9′ x 11′). It is a stick built ranch w/ a hip roof, 2×6 ceiling joists overlapped over bearing wall. Existing joists parallel to the long direction of the tray. Anyone done this? I have some rough thoughts but I will keep them to myself for now. I know I have lateral forces to contend with to keep the walls from spreading and also have to keep the ceiling above me. Thanks in advance.

Seems to me it could get pretty messy tearing into existing framing.
How high are your ceilings? If they're high enough, you might be able to frame a tray ceiling underneath the existing, and not have quite as much of a mess. That way the existing ceiling and framing could stay in place across most of the room.

A: Because so many men fake foreplay.
Boss,
Can't. 8' now. Besides messy is good. Sometimes it's the hunt not the kill.
Momma ain't gonna luv ya none do you be huntin' all day and all night for two years chasin' dee stray tray.
My question is what does this load bearing wall support?
I'm surre this can all be done amd the previous post may have explained it right but details are still lacking in my mind..

J,
Use to do this ages ago. Run double 2x12 plate to plate, run double 2x12 between first 2x12's. Run stub joist from 2x12's to plates. Run 2x6's on top of 2x12's. Leg down from your hip and walls will stay put until you brace. May have to run cantilevered (sp) braces to hip. Remember to strongback the 2x6's and tie into rafters. Hope this is clear.

Thanks KK, fairly clear, you had me until my leg came down from my hip. Sounds like a temp brace?
Pif, all it's holding is the ceiling joists.
Good news is it sounds doable, keep em coming

I think he's got you headed right then.
Give Momma a slap on the rump for us!
